When Passion Meets Action

In a previous blog posting, I shared a significant concern I have with the Law of Attraction. Don’t get me wrong. I have seen the Law of Attraction’s results in my life. And (this is an important and), there are other important laws in the universe that impact our lives. The law of gravity for one helps keep our feet on the ground. Stopping at red lights is another law that is essential to our well-being and our cars. Then there are those laws that directly impact business such as the Law of Supply and Demand that we learned in Economics class.

Virtually anyone who appears to be solely using the Law of Attraction or seems to be enjoying an “effortless” business, is also employing the Law of Action and working their butt off behind the scenes. Either that, or they have been doing so for many years and have now become an “overnight success.” Granted they likely love what they do so it doesn’t feel like work, but when it comes down to it they are acting on their passion and reaping the rewards.

Here’s an illustration by Chellie Campbell.

You can learn how to play the piano. You can study music composition and theory, learn to read music and build dexterity in your fingers. You can buy the finest piano money can buy, rent an auditorium, sell tickets and gather an audience.

But if you don’t actually put your fingers on the keyboard and play–nothing will happen. You can sit in front of the piano and think “Ohmmm, I’m playing beautiful music, ohmmm…” but unless you’ve rigged a player piano, no music is going to come out of it.

Let the Law of Attraction meet the Law of Action. When passion meets action, results happen.

And not just any action, mind you. They must be “Top of the List” action items. For those who would like to learn more, check out my 7 Key Strategies for Getting More Stuff Done email mini-series.

Are You a Hopeless Harry or Down in the Dumps Deb?

You might be asking what’s this Corner Stone thing all about? Corner Stone Community Sites helps home-based business owners “work smarter, not harder.” At each of the 4 Corner Stones, there are practical and fundamental tricks, tips and tools that show business owners how to “own that stone” so they manage their business, rather than the business running them ragged.

If you think you can;
or if you think you can’t . . .
you’re right! ~ Henry Ford

What you’re about to read is a fictional story I wrote about two business owners to describe the very REAL challenges from one of the Corner Stones that I’ve helped business owners work through on their way to success.

The first business owner is Dave (or Deb).  Dave is down in the dumps about his business. You could also describe him with many of the other “d” feelings: depressed, dejected, discouraged. Dave has a sense of under-achievement (regardless of how much he has actually accomplished in his business). He doesn’t have confidence that he is going to make something of himself or that his business is ever going to go anywhere. Dave’s feelings are not only dragging him down; they are also dragging his business down with him.

This story is also about Heidi (or Harry). Heidi is feeling hopeless and insecure about her business. As a result she often gets anxious and has trouble sleeping so she gets tired during the day. She forgets where she put things down and is often late to appointments. Sometimes it feels as though her business is never going to improve. Every time something doesn’t go her way, it gets more and more difficult to stay upbeat. She makes up stories about her business that are either not true or only vaguely resemble what’s really going on. She gets frustrated and loses confidence. She knows that what she has to offer has value, but wonders if others will ever recognize it (not to mention pay for it). She asks herself if she really has what it takes and if she is going to make it before she runs out of money.

Both Dave and Heidi have work to do at their East Corner Stone which focuses on improving mindset. This is the lens on the world impacting feelings, thoughts, actions, and therefore, results. I also call this Internal Focus because this Corner Stone is all about where you place your attention and intention.

To master this cornerstone, business owners must have:

  • Beliefs which encourages follow through and action
  • Mindfulness to keep track of time and important items
  • Balance to put their all into their business and still have a life

Once Dave and Heidi are able to master this Corner Stone, they maintain a positive mindset. They now trust that they can follow through on “top of the list” action items that grow their business.

Heidi now knows deep in her heart that when she markets (using the strategies in her marketing plan), her clients show up and hire her. She is more relaxed during the day and is sleeping soundly at night. As a result, she is more present to herself and others, remembers where puts down important papers and is able to keep track of time.

When Dave thinks about all the progress he’s made, he now feels excited and motivated to grow his business. He notices the progress he makes and as a result he is confident that he will find success with his business.

As a result Heidi and Dave’s businesses finally reach six figures. They even take care of themselves better and stay in integrity with their word. One nice side benefit is that their work now feels like play.

Do you recognize yourself in Dave or Heidi? If yes, you are so in the right place. It doesn’t have to be this way and you are not stuck in the same old same old.

If you think that starting and growing a business is hard, you are right.
If you think that it will take a long time, you are right.
If you think that you can fail, you are right.
If you think that you can fulfill your passion this way, you are right.
If you think that you can build something you can be proud of, you are right. ~ Barry Moltz in You Need To Be a Little Crazy: The Truth About Starting and Growing Your Business

Introducing the Law of Action

Have you heard of the Law of Attraction? In short, you attract into your life what you think and feel. The law is very clear. If you want good things to come in to your life, you’ve got to be thinking about those things and feeling as if you already have them. If you have things in your life you wish were different, it’s time to take a look at what you’re focusing on.

I have a concern though, about how people engage with the Law of Attraction. The teachers of Law of Attraction talk about action, but many of their students only focus on the attraction part. There is a disconnect between their thoughts and beliefs and their actions. So much so that they tend to downplay the action part. Whether it is due to fear of success or failure, lack of confidence in marketing or a desire for an easy way out, they just don’t act on their “top of the list” items.

However, you can’t take the “action” out of “attraction!” The following story illustrates this point.

A man finds himself in dire financial trouble. He prays earnestly to God to help him out of his predicament. “God, I’m about to lose my car. Please help me. Let me win the lottery.” Lottery night comes, but sadly he is not the winner.

Things go from bad to worse. Without a car to get to work, he loses his job. Without a job, his mortgage is foreclosed on and he loses his home. Without a home, his wife leaves him taking the kids. After each horrible step in the mounting crisis, he pleads with God to let him win the lottery, but he never does.

Finally, broke, hungry, living on the street, he tries again. “God, please, my life is a wreck. I have no car, no home, no family. Please let me win the lottery just this once so that I can turn my life around. I beg you.”

Suddenly, a flash of light rends the sky and the voice of God echoes down from the heavens.

“Meet me halfway. Buy a ticket.”

Funny and poignant. I love it! Yes, your thoughts and beliefs have a huge impact on what comes in to your life. And true progress comes when you meet your beliefs halfway and get into action. I call this the Law of Action, and I’ll share more about this in my next blog posting.
